Its time to play ball

Hello to my fellow MLBloggers. I’d like to welcome you to this new blog. Interacting with all the fans is something I’m looking forward to, and I’m interested in what you have to say through your comments here.

MexicoI am excited about starting another year of baseball with the Devil Rays, and this will be extra-special for me because I will be playing in the World Baseball Classic.

First of all, it?s going to be a great honor that I?m going to be with Mexico. Second, playing in the WBC, it?s not just baseball, it?s the whole country of Mexico. Hopefully people will realize there?s something more to Mexico than soccer.

I was asked here at Spring Training if I have any early predictions for this first-ever event. We?re hopefully in the semifinals: United States, Dominican, Venezuela and Mexico.

I am here with the Devil Rays at Spring Training in Florida now, and then I go to Team Mexico’s training camp from March 3-6 in Tucson, Ariz. Then comes our first game against the U.S. team on March 7 at Chase Field in Phoenix. I will be sharing my thoughts here during the WBC so I hope you’ll join me and feel free to leave comments.

Hey, Mr. Cantu, I just want to say that it was a great pleasure to have you on my fantasy team last year, you hit me a couple tie-breaking home runs that helped me place really high in my league standings. i think the devil rays are gonna have a good season this year. my friend brian says he’s gonna draft you this year before i do, but he doesn’t know the half of it… i was just wondering what your thoughts are on fantasy baseball. i think it helps fans follow baseball even closer than they would otherwise, so in that way it’s good for baseball. but on the other hand, don’t you think it is kind of weird how people who have you on their fantasy team think of you as their property? i don’t do that, but i know people who do. some people take things too seriously!

    Hi Jorge.
Congrats for your great 2005 season, I’m sure you’ll have an even better season this year.

As as mexican I also want to see Mexico team in semis, or in finals if possible. Let’s see how everything goes during first round.

    Best wishes. 🙂

Hi Jorge, I just wanted to say I’ve gone on record to say you’ll jack 40 HR’s this year with at least 125 RBI’s. Congrats on last season. I told everyone about my ultimate payoff sleeper pick for this season, and I am glad to say that it was you, as I made drafting you i of the highest priority (which I did do end up doing). I’m glad that after this season you’ll be recognized around the league as a one of the best 3rd baseman around. Godd luck this season, though I’m a jays fan, I’ll be rooting for ya.

Hello Jorge. You are one of my favorite players to watch. I think the Rays will be a very fun team this year . If you played in the nl west you’d run away with it!

Firstpitch, I think you should do whatever you have to do to get Jorge on your team. I predict he’ll have an MVP type year!

Hello Jorge. Glad to see that you had such an amazing season last year. I was wondering something though…How do you feel about the Milwaukee Brewers? They are my favorite team and I would love to have you in Milwaukee. Good Luck on the upcoming season.

Hey Jorge, I’m a huge Devil Rays fan and my name is Mike. Me and my girlfriend Andrea’a come to about 40 games a year at Tropicana Field to see you guys play and after the last game of the year we waited out by the players parking lot and you were signing autographs and you told her that if you forgot her name she could slap you lol. I don’t think she would go that far but just thought I would remind you of her name because I’m sure we will be seeing you soon.

    Jorge,
As a Tampan, I’d like to say it was great watching you play in person last year. Now that you are set in a position (and hopefully at #3 in the lineup), I can only imagine what you will accomplish. I feel privilledged that I will be there to witness it. I recently purchased DRays season tickets in section 128, so (if you can), give us a nod sometime. I’ll be the one cheering the loudest!

BTW: I doubt you remember it, be we’ve actually met twice. I have a 5 year old daughter and you are her favorite player. She always wears a pink ‘Rays’ jersey and yells ‘Jorge Cantu’!

    Jorege,
As a Devil Rays fan who lives in New Hampshire (in the heart of red sox nation), i take a lot of **** about rooting for the drays. But I think this is they year we finally break .500 and finish above the red sox. Anyways, you have been my favorite major league player ever since the begining of last season, when i saw some highlights of you and realized how good you were. So keep up the good work and 2006, and go Rays!

    Tocayazo:
No cambies nunca.

Hello Jorge, I’m glad to see that you are blogging, I think that it is a great idea, and think it would be awesome if more players would do so, as you said, to interact with the fans. Anyways, good luck in the WBC, and for anyone interested in other Devil Rays blogs/websites, I highly suggest these three:
    http://www.RaysBaseball.com

    http://www.devilrays.mostvaluablenetwork.com (RaysTalk)

And my own personal blog, which I author along with Jake Larsen, http://www.draysbay.com

  19. aballer18@excite.com

First off, i want to give a shout out to my friend from the Rays message board, Raysfanaddict (cleitschuh).

    Jorge,

It’s been a real pleasure watching you play for the last year and a half. I remember when you first came up and I wasn’t real familiar with you. I remember it seemed like every time you got to the plate it was a double in the gap. I used to bug all my friends and try and predict what would happen in the inning. My prediction would usually involve Carl or someone getting on first in front of you and then you crushing an rbi double in the gap to bring in a run. It came true a couple of times 😉

I second the great idea for starting this blog. We fans will enjoy reading your thoughts. Thank you so much for all you’ve done in Tampa Bay and I’m looking forward to a great future with you in right in the middle of things.

We’ll be rooting for you on the Mexican team!

    GO RAYS!!!

    Jorge,

Mr. Cantu what a delight to talk to with you.. Congrats on a great individual 05, started off a little rocky with Alomar in camp but that was solved with his retirement. Do you think 2nd is the best fit for you and the D-Rays, i do, 2nd baseman with POP like yours is tough to find.. Great luck in the WBC and know that there are people that dont just look at Mexico as a soccer place, growing up a Dodger fan in North Dakota Fernando was and still is my favorite player, as for you youve quickly climbed my list with your seemingly calm and cool demeanor on the field. Good luck with the WBC and the Rays this year, im interested to see how newly acquired Edwin Jackson does this year, i still beleive hes got alot of potential and a few more good arms in your rotation is the only missing link to a very good D-Ray club..

  28. billye1@hotmail.com

    Hey Jorge!
I’ve wanted to touch base with you since last season.. so I’m really glad you’re blogging. I spent three years working in the Birmingham Barons front office.. and this was during the time you were playing double-a ball with the Orlando Rays. As a matter of fact I was the P.A. announcer for several of your games in Birmingham.. and had a blast with you last name when you would come to bat. Anyway.. I was really happy for you when I saw you had made it to the show. Johnny Gomes was another one I saw play with Orlando during that time and was happy for when he made it to the bigs. I now live just outside the Bay Area so I’ll see you at the Trop during the coming season. Congrats on the WBC and go Rays!

Hi there handsome. I just wanted to take this chance to tell you that I am your biggest fan, and I am so in love with you. I have been following your career since 2002 and I am so proud of you. You look really cute in your uniform. I love to watch you play. I bet you are a really good dancer. I think I see you looking at me and waving to me at the baseball games. Do you have a girlfriend? I hope not. If you do is she prettier than me? People say I look like Mischa Barton and we all know how much you like her, huh? I really want you to give me a chance. I speak some spanish too, so it would be easy for us to communicate. Will you go to Prom with me this year? I know you busy last year but maybe this year you can fit it in to your busy schedule? Please say yes. I will be at the games and you will see me and I hope you can give me a hug. Maybe a kiss if you are lucky. ;O) Good luck this year, I’m watching you………….

Hi Jorge! My wife and I have been fans of yours since you first started with the Rays in Orlando. Back then we saw your potencial and said that you would soon make it to the show. We always looked forward to hearing the Rush tune as you came up to bat in Orlando. For the last 2 seasons, we made the drive to St. Pete to see over 25 games. This past winter, I took a new job in Chicago ILL. We bought tickets to all 3 games against the White Sox when you guys are in town. We are also flying down for the first 2 home games on April 10 and 11. I hope we get the chance to say hello. Have a great season!

    Jorge,

From McAllen Texas now living in Dallas, seeing you play every time when you visit the Texas Rangers. 2005 was a great year for you and now a starting at the World Baseball Classic for 2006. Just like last year, have fun and oh yeah, the times i watch you play and when your ahead on the count you tend to drop your elbow before you turn your waist and not when your behind on the count. One of your best supporting fans that likes to watch that sweet natural swing.

    Jorge,
It was exciting to see you play in the Classic. Will you be playing anywhere near Austin, TX this year? I would like to take my family to see you play. My mother was born in Guanajuato, Guanajuato and we love Mexico.

Although I am 60 years old, I still play fastpitch softball. I coached women’s fastpitch softball for 7 years at the college level. Our softball team plays in Reynosa, MX in October every year.

Again, we are very happy for your victory over the U.S.A. and expecially for your success. We would really like to see you play, even if it means we have to travel. To us, you are already our favorite player and already a Fernando Valenzuela.

    Thanks,

    Andres Cantu

Our dad was from the area south of Monterrey. So we are jokingly telling our friends that you are our cousin.
